Episode 30 - Podcasting 101 with Audacity, Levelator, Podomatic, and LibSyn

This meetup is hosted by and presented at the Business Success Center at 7600 Burnet Rd #130, Austin, TX 78757 • 512.933.1983. Thanks to Jan Triplett for her hospitality.

INTRO
This podcast was originally created for presentation to my Podcasting Meetup in Austin, Tx on April 7th, 2010 and has been modified slightly for presentation to the same group on July 7th, 2010. It describes how to create a podcast and use the free service called podomatic to publish it to the Internet with support from iTunes. (Yes, iTunes will play on Windows and Macs.)

CONTENT

I can’t believe that I used to think that podcasting was too hard for me to do. Through repeated meetings with my friend, Fred Castaneda, former coordinator of the Austin Podcasters Meetup, it just go easier and easier.

My first step? I used Audacity to create a VERY simple audio file about 2 minutes long which did absolutely nothing more than identify me. Audacity is an open source (free) application available from http://audacity.sourceforge.com/ and if you need help, get some Audacity tutorials from the Guides and Tutorials source.

Except for a microphone or perhaps a microphone headset, that’s all that’s needed to get started. Note that I have said nothing about publishing at this point.  I’ve just identified the programs available.

My second step was to figure out how to publish my podcast so that it was available on the Web.

Note: You do NOT want to put your audio file on the same server with your webpage/blog. The audio file is usually much larger that the webpage/blog which is generally just a text file with perhaps a small graphic or two. The audio file will eat up your bandwidth and end up eventually costing you more that a couple of alternative podcast hosting options.

PODCAST HOSTING

A very common, inexpensive way of hosting your podcast is to get an account with Liberated Syndicatiion Rates are shown on the web site. I have chosen the $12/month plan to get started with intentions of increasing size as required. This is the first plan that offers full statistics.

TO SIGN UP FOR LIBSYN

1. Enter email address, a username that becomes part of a libsyn email address, and your password. 2. Choose a Service Level – $5/month, $12/month, $24/month, $36/month, or $60/month.

A second and free alternative is to use Podomatic seen at http://www.podomatic.com/featured This service has the added benefit of publishing your podcast as well as listing it on iTunes, a difficult process if you’ve ever tried to do it manually.

TO SIGN UP FOR A FREE PODOMATIC ACCOUNT

1. Login to http://www.podomatic.com/user/create
2. Create a new account

3. Add a photo or image – upload from your computer. I uploaded an photo of me with labels.
4. Add text as you see fit. Perhaps show notes? Perhaps the script that I’m talking from right now.
5. Click Submit button
6. Voila, you are now on your own Podomatic account page

PROCESS

The obvious first step was to get accounts at LibSyn and at Podomatic. I recorded the words you’re now hearing with a Logitech G330 headset, Audacity, and Levelator. I published it on both LibSyn and Podomatic. I created an image using Photoshop to add titles to one of my pictures. I created a post on my blog at http://exploringnewmedia.com/ which links to both instances of the same podcast.  I did it. You can do it too.

Episode 29 - Using Podomatic to Create a Podcast and List It On ITunes

Hello, This is Lindsey Allen

Unfortunately, I was overtaken by a severe allergy attack for our April 2010 meeting but Fred Castenada, former coordinator, and John Mayo, podcaster extraordinaire, stepped in and presented some quality information.

I had already recorded a podcast of my topic but since my voice was still raspy and I was coughing incessantly, I was not going to create a podcast but only blog about April's meeting. Then I said 'nah', this is a PODCASTING meetup. Let the chips fall where they may. So, here it goes.

Remember that the audio you are hearing was created on April 6th, while the following events occurred as scheduled on April 7th.

Actual Events:
Fred demonstrated hardware - the Zoom Q3 audio/video recorder may be seen at Amazon.com at the URL shown on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-Q3-Camcorder-Recorder-Transcend/dp/B002XHFA58?&camp=212361&linkCode=wey&tag=httpwwwexpl0e-20&creative=391825º , $250

and the Samson GoMic reviewed at the URL reviewed at http://www.gadgetreview.com/2009/11/samson-gomic-review.html, $39.95

John Mayo continued with his discussion of his long running podcast,
http://www.comicbookpage.com/Podcast/, 370+ episodes and climbing.

Fred then did an impromptu demonstration of Podomatic, a free podcast hosting service that creates an iTunes link.

Details of the next meeting will be posted at http://podcasting.meetup.com/92 in sufficient time to make plans for the May meetup - topic How to Conduct a Podcast Interview

Hosted by: Business Success Center, Austin, Texas. http://www.bscusa.com/

Episode 28 - Using Audacity to Create a Podcast
March 12, 2010 09:00 AM PST
itunes pic

This podcast was recorded in my Austin, Texas office, AKA the middle west bedroom of my home using a Logitech G330 headset/mic and Audacity.

It is about the March 3rd meeting where I and John Mayo presented two unique looks at how Audacity, a multitrack audio editor and recorder can be used to create podcasts. I did it from the viewpoint of a slightly informed newbie while John pulled out all the stops and showed what he could do. Of course, being a veteran of about 370 episodes of his podcast, ComicBookPage.com gave him a podcasting leg up.

I did my presentation using an Apple MacBook Pro and John used a Windows computer. No basic differences since Audacity will run on both OS X and Windows. And Linux.

The March 3rd, 2010 meeting kicked off at 6:30pm with the coordinator and 7 guests in attendance. The meetup was conducted at the offices of our sponsor, the Business Success Center at 7600 Burnett Road, suite 130. Visit their site. Topic of the April meeting will be Using Podomatic to publish your podcasts for free with a link in iTunes. Yes, in iTunes.

Details of the April meeting will be posted at http://podcasting.meetup.com/92/

Episode 27-New organizer and meetup location - Lindsey Allen
Clean
February 13, 2010 02:41 PM PST

This podcast was recorded in the fairly noisy coffee shop of my favorite bookstore in a shopping center in Austin, Texas on February 12th, 2010. Fred Castaneda, the outgoing coordinator and I, Lindsey Allen, the incoming coordinator chatted briefly using my new Zoom Q3 recording device. The Feb 3rd, 2010 meeting kicked off at 7pm with the new coordinator and 3 guests in attendance. Fred Castaneda, the coordinator for over 2 years was unavoidably absent. We had intended to have a transitional moment where he handed over the reins of the Podcasting Meetup to me, Lindsey Allen, but as often happens, the real world got in the way. But I assumed leadership and we progressed with the meetup in a very relaxed and unstructured way. A very geeky couple of hours passed much too quickly but not before we decided the immediate future of the meetup. First change is the meeting place. We met at Central Market near 35th and Lamar for several months. Through the generosity of Jan Triplett of Business Success Center, we will be conducting our next meeting at her location (7600 Burnet Road) on March 3, 2010 at 7PM. Topic of the meeting will be Using Audacity. Audacity is an open source application running on both Windows and Macintosh platforms that allows you to record, edit, and finalize your physical audio files in preparation of publishing them as full-fledged podcasts. There will be two presentations - one using Windows by John Mayo (http://comicbookpage.com/), a seasoned podcaster and one using a Macintosh by me(http://exploringnewmedia.com) as a beginning podcaster. Details of the next meeting will be posted at http://podcasting.meetup.com/92 in sufficient time to make plans for the March meetup. Hosted by: Business Success Center, Austin, Texas. http://www.bscusa.com/ Great deal on the Zoom Q3 at http://amazon.com, http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-Q3-Camcorder-Recorder-Transcend/dp/B002XHFA58/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1266084260&sr=8-2

In this episode of the Austin Podcaster and New Media Meetup Group, we deliver a summary of the Meetup that took place on 12 January 2010 at the Central Market-North location in Austin, Texas.

We discussed the following items on the Agenda:
- video studio for rental with target audience of Small business owners;
- Special Guest, Jan Tripplett, of the Business Success Center, for feedback on such a studio;
- Portable Video recorders for mobile podcasts in video:
* Zoom Q3
* Kodak Zi8
* flip HD video

- Comparison and contrast of the three devices (we had all 3 at the meeting)
(in the audio podcast, the matrix comparison is described)

- a review of mobile PHONE CASTING with www.ipadio.com for those who don't even want to have a computer available or iTunes to create and publish a cast (a phone cast within their phone log, or phlog).

- We also reviewed all the events-- from BarCamp-like events (BarCamp, PodCamp, FreeLanceCamp, techCamp, ProductCamp, etc.) in and around the local area within the past few months, and the upcoming events, like ProductCampPotluck in January in Austin.

- We reviewed the Social Media Club presentation on SOCIAL COMMERCE scheduled for 19 January, as well as the SOCIAL MEDIA BREAKFAST events recently.

- Finally, we had Lindsey Allen review the purpose and details of the project called EXPLORING NEW MEDIA. Not only did Lindsey pass out brand new business cards, but he also has a twitter account for the project (@xplorenewmedia).

- Our thanks to Michael Cohn, a member who recorded the entire session on his Zoom H4n portable recorder (in "stamina" mode) and has provided the following links for those who want to listen to the meeting, as he described to us the method of producing the audio:
===========================
http://pcmacnme.podomatic.com/
http://digital-etcetera.blogspot.com/
http://pcmacnme.blogspot.com/

The recordings were made with a Zoom H4n in stereo using the .wav format at 44.1KHz
The recordings were then mixed down in SoundStudio 3 for Mac to mono and compressed to .mp3 at a 128kbps bit rate.

Part 1 is 39.12 minutes which equates to 35.9MB in file size @ 128kbps
Part 2 is 57.11 minutes which equates to 52.4MB in file size @ 128kbps

I then uploaded the files to PodoMatic for your listening pleasure.
I then embedded the podcasts to my blog using Blogo for Mac.

Episode 25- Portable Video Podcast recorders & processes

This episode of the Austin Podcasters Group meetup deals with the topics of:
(1) The upcoming meeting for this winter, which will be on January 12, 2010, from 7pm to 9 p.m. at the Market Central - North locatin in Austin, Texas, at 40th Street and Lamar.
(2) Focus on the new portable video podcast recorders, including the:

as well as the video recording processes, environment and software.
(3) Exploring New Media -- what this program has to offer and its plans for 2010

As you will hear in this audio episode, we will have the 3 portable video recorders on display and plan a quick demo of each to show you the hardware. We have also asked specialists in video recording and podcasting to share with us the differences with "conventional" video recorders (e.g., flip video cameras- classic) and the HD models.

We will also highlight the audio and video tools available for "roving reporters and correspondents" (thus trying to support the KOOP community, which has told us they have great interest in this area) such as the iPadio phonecast system for the broadcaster community, or use of the Zoom Q3 portable recorder.

We will review events and announcements for the Podcasting, Social Media and New Media Community.

And we will ask both Lindsey Allen and Michael Cohn to return to give more details on the program called EXPLORING NEW MEDIA, since it is important for Podcasters in this group to understand.

Until then, we will send out the notices of the meeting to all 81 members via the MEETUP facility this week. Also, you may contact us by sending an email to austinpodcasters@gmail.com.

In this episode, we deliver a summary of the meetup, where we had Mac, Sheila, Dave and Lindsey attended.
We presented the following topics to the team:

- Events, including Podcamps (San Antonio in May and upcoming in Phoenix, AZ, on 14 Nov2009), ProductCamp held in Austin on 15 Aug 2009, Social Media Club and Social Media Breakfast events during the next 2 weeks from the meeting.
- BlogWorld and New Media Expo in October at Las Vegas.

- We described and highlighted the Zoom H4n recorder. However, the main interest and enthusiasm was in the Zoom H2 recorder (the pocket-size podcast recording device).
- We then went into Screencasting, and we gave an overview of the following:
* Camtasia Studio (on PC, but also coming for the Mac);
* Jing and Jing Pro (for both platforms)
* ScreenToaster (for both platforms)
* CamStudio (which we will try to give a demo at our next meeting)- for the PC
* ScreenFlow, Snow Leopard (feature to be built in) and SnapZ-ProX, as well as CamTwist for the Mac.
- We discussed the file formats for Screencasts: FLV, SWF, MP4, WMV and some applications and cameras that post directly to YouTube upon recording a video.
- We spoke about Quiktime Pro as a video trimming application.
- We also spent a good deal of time speaking about iPadio in order to record Phonecasts in your own free account which will give you a phlog (phone log). We had a recording created as a demo to show people how to use it, and we actually recorded a phonecast live during the session.
- We talked about SquareSpace (and perhaps wae can demo it in a future meeting), which is a platform that would include everything (or so they hope)--the blog, the hosting, the posting of audio/video files for podcasting, etc.
- We mentioned maestroconference.com and glance.com to do group collaboration and record them as podcasts via audio.

We also wanted to give you the link for the 6 tutorials on audacity:

http://www.how-to-podcast-tutorial.com/17-audacity-tutorial.htm

Thank you for your support, and we shall next deliver the info for the upcoming August 2009 meetup!

Episode 18- Beginners' Meetup on 22 April 2009 and the Zoom H4N Recorder
April 23, 2009 11:57 AM PDT
itunes pic

This Meetup for the Beginners was held on 22 April 2009 at the Central Market - North location (in the COMMUNITY ROOM), 4001 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas. Plenty of free parking was available.

We pretty much follwed the agenda for this Session that was oriented toward the BEGINNING PODCASTERS

We had our full and display of podcast equipment/software/books - including three Zoom Portable Recorders (Zoom H4, Zoom H2 and the new Zoom H4N)

After we got to know Armando, Karen Kreps and John Mayo had arrived at the start of the meeting. We then had our update and demo of the portable recorders for podcasts of the Zoom Hx Family, including a demo (some of which is in the audio podcast episode)of the NEW Zoom H4N.

We spoke about different tools--including the free version 3.0 of Camtasia Studio from TechSmith (version 3 only), the MP3 Tag Tools editor for ID3 tags, which you can get for free at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/massid3lib

We then focused on Audacity (free software on all platforms). You can get a free copy from:
http://www.audacity.sourceforge.net

We referred to the six Camtasia video tutorials from Jason Van Orden at web site:
http://www.how-to-podcast-tutorial.com/17-audacity-tutorial.htm

And then we had a brief demo of editing features and tools within Audacity as we created an audio track, used fade-in and fade-out tools with some imported audio bed music that I had licensed from www.michaelandmike.com, and then we showed how to synchronize, overlay and create a WAV file of one track with 2 stereo channels. Finally, we showed how to use the LEVELATOR free software (from IT Conversations at the Conversations Network -- originally Gigavox) to equalize and "levelate" the wav file with a new name extension of .output.
Lastly, we created the mp3 file by exporting it and then edited the file and included a graphic as the podcast badge by using the MP3 Tag Tools utility.

A great evening of sharing information and assisting one another, the general feeling was that it was of great value to the members who attended--so much that almost all of them are feeling empowered to attend the May 18th session for the Intermediate and Advanced podcasters.

thanks for your support, and we shall see you on May 18th at 7pm in the COMMUNITY ROOM of the Central Market- North location at 4001 North Lamar.

Sincerely,
Fred Castaneda
Organizer for 2008-9

We will finally begin the planning for a possible PODCAMP in Austin in late 2009 or early 2010, as well as getting a co-organizer, who can then take over by September as lead co-organizer, as I will work with that individual until January of 2010.

In this episode, we briefly mention in the audio file about the two presentations and their associated visuals which we try to bring to the Group, as the members who are beginning podcasters stated in the last meeting (18 Feb 2009).

1. PODCASTING BASICS
- This was presented at the last Podcamp San Antonio session. You can link to this at:

http://media.libsyn.com/media/fgcastgain/Podcasting-Basics-Podcamp-SAT-3May08.output.mp3

2. PODCASTING- FROM HOBBY TO CORPORATE TO PROFITABLE
- This was delivered at the Podcamp in Arizona, in which both Doug Welch and Evo Terra participated as attendees, and they also contributed to the session. The mp3 file is:

http://media.libsyn.com/media/fgcastgain/PodcampAZ-Session-Hobby-to-Monetizing-Podcast.mp3

- And the visuals in pdf format are at this link:

http://media.libsyn.com/media/fgcastgain/PodcampAZ-Session-Hobby-to-Monetizing-Podcasts.pdf

In the meantime, we will be confirming the dates and times for the next 2 meetup sessions (April and May/June), just as soon as we get the schedule posted at the Central Market-North location at 4100 North Lamar in Austin, Texas.
Our next episode will include a map for getting to the meetup. The room seats 15 to 20 very comfortably, and parking is not a problem. Also, since the Central Market North location has an adjoining grill/restaurant, you can get a bite to eat before the meeting.

Episode 15- Summary of Meetup on 18 February 2009 at Conjunctured
February 19, 2009 05:21 PM PST
itunes pic

In this episode of The Austin Podcasters Group Meetup, we review the meeting on 18 February 2009, which took place at the Conjunctured location (www.conjunctured.com).
In the audio episode, you will hear that we discussed the following topics:

- Past events:
a. the Social Media Telesummit, in which Fred Castaneda presented the topic of PREMIUM PODCASTING: how to create revenue streams and create passive income.; also
b. the FREELANCECAMP event in San Antonio, in which several podcasters presented topics, and in which there were a couple of podcast episodes (#79 and #80) in the series of http://www.strugglingentrepreneur.com -- in which the FREELANCECAMP event and its value to entrepreneurs was discussed;
c. Social Media Club meeting on 15 January 2009, hosted at Vignette (on Mopac), and in which three specialists in the video production space gave hints and tips on HOW TO RECORD SOCIAL VIDEO (Tom Stagg, Storme Wood and Giovanni Gallucci). Episodes 78A, 78B and 78C at www.strugglingentrepreneur.com has the recording of their presentations.

- Upcoming Podcasting events: PODCAMP San Antonio in May, and PODCAMP Houston in June.
- Social Media and other events: CAREERCAMP ONLINE on 21 Feb 2009 (for info: www.welchwrite.com), and the ULTIMATE MIXER live event on 21 Feb 2009 at the Sheraton Hotel (11th Stret and I-35 in downtown Austin).
- BlogWorld and Podcaster World in Las Vegas from October 15-17, 2009
- South by Southwest (Interactive) in March.

We also had a display of different dynamic and condenser microphones, portable recorders (e.g., Zoom H4 and Zoom H2), as well as Podcast Factory and mixers. We also had display of numerous books--ranging from the PODCAST BIBLE to EXPERT PODCASTING PRACTICES FOR DUMMIES and SKYPE FOR DUMMIES, and PROMOTING YOUR PODCAST, etc.

We also had 11 attendees and the small conference room was not enough to hold them all comfortably. Almost half the attendees were new to podcasting and beginners in their knowledge-level. However, we had interactive discussions and sharing of what the attendees were desiring to publish, the themes that they wished to promote and the level of help that they would need.

The group agreed that the next meeting should be in a venue with a larger space. We agreed to meet at the CENTRAL MARKET--NORTH location (one which this group had used in July and August of 2008). Fred Castaneda agreed to contact the individual who manages the schedule of the COMMUNITY ROOM and get a couple of dates in April, 2009. The meetup facility on the Internet will be the chief means of giving the details to the Group about the location and confirmation of meeting dates.

The Group also wanted to have more resources locally available for beginners to have access with information about starting a podcast, resources and tips on creating your own podcast. Fred Castaneda has a couple of presentations from recent PODCAMPS that are about an hour in length, as well as the charts. He will post them in a box.net account and deliver the link in the next posting of this blog, which is at
http://www.austinpodcasters.podomatic.com.

Thanks to all who participated, and we definitely look forward to a great set of meetings in April and following--one for beginners and another for the intermediate/advanced topics (on separate days).

Thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Fred Castaneda

Episode 14- Summary of Meetup on 3 Dec 2008 at Conjunctured in Austin
January 10, 2009 08:58 AM PST
itunes pic

In this episode of the Austin Podcasters Group meetup, we describe the event that took place on 3 December 2008 at the Conjunctured location in downtown East Austin.
In the audio episode, you will hear that we welcome 2 new members who participated quite a bit during that time. As a matter of fact, we even included a 2-minute audio clip from them (a part of that when one of them was testing and "playing" with the Flip Video camera which we had in the display)-- and we captured the audio clip with the Zoom H2 portable recorder (also on display).
We include the album art and the image on this post with a sample of the display which we had in the conference room at the Conjunctured location.

Our next meetup will be on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2009, at the Conjunctured location conference room (again).

We encourage the membership to attend, as we want to discuss the following:

(1) - a summary of the podcasting, Social Media and New Media events in December and January;

(2) - a recap of the Social Media Telesummit (from January 21 to January 30). For more information, you may go to the URL of:
http://www.socialmediatelesummit.com

As a matter of fact, there will be a session on how to build revenue streams via premium content and podcasting. More on this at the Feb. 18th Meetup.

(3) - a direction for 2009 for the Group, including a new Organizer for 2009, which will include a smooth transition and which will provide value for the membership.

Again, if you have any questions, please contact us:

(a) either via the MEETUP facility online at:
http://podcasting.meetup.com/92/

(b) or you can send an email to
Austinpodcasters@gmail.com

Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you there on Wednesday evening, 18 February 2009, at the Conjunctured Location, 1309 East 7th Street, Austin, Texas downtown in the "Startup District."

Sincerely,
Fred Castaneda

Episode 13- Review of Austin Podcasters Group meeting on 9 October 2008
October 26, 2008 02:08 PM PDT
itunes pic

In this brief audio episode of THE AUSTIN PODCASTER USERS GROUP MEETUP series, we describe the meeting held on 9 October 2008 at the conference room at the Conjunctured facility (on the 1300 Block of East 7th Street in Downtown Austin in the "startup district.").

The main items discussed were:
- Introduction to Conjunctured by Cesar Torres with Q/A;
- Podcast events coming up
- Social media club and social media breakfast events;
- Social media tools;
- Beginner tools and resources;
- Future meeting locations;
- Call for a new organizer starting in January, 2009.

We also decided to hold the next meeting on WEDNESDAY, 3 December 2008, at the Conjunctured Facility, as well.
In addition, there will be a new organizer starting in Feburary, 2009, as Fred Castaneda will step down and allow someone else the opportunity to organize the group.
The suggested format would be to have a main organizer, along with a co-organizer, so that the latter can learn from the former and then take over after a brief transfer period of a meeting or two has taken place.
Then this practice will ensure that all can participate as group leaders and get a wonderful experience and value from being the "leader" of the group.

Episode 12 - VIRTUAL Meetup online - 25 Sept 2008
September 28, 2008 04:55 PM PDT
itunes pic

This audio episode of the AUSTIN PODCASTERS GROUP describes the VIRTUAL meetup on 25 September 2008. Unlike the other prior meetups, this one took place entirely online, via the webinar facilities of Dave Jackson and his SCHOOL OF PODCASTING (at http://www.schoolofpodcasting.com).

We discussed upcoming events, different news in the world of podcasting, and then turned it over to Dave Jackson, as our special guest, to present:
- tutorials for learning how to podcast (12 steps);
- resources for podcasters of all levels;
- recommended hardware equipment for beginners;
- demonstration of audio editing and mixing software;
and then he conducted a ROUNDTABLE discussion, very much like his own "roundtables" for the paid subscribers of the SCHOOL OF PODCASTING. This was our chance to have a free 30-minute session with a very experienced podcast consultant and we called this time "ASK DAVE JACKSON."

The feedback at the end of the session via the online text chat window in the webinar screen all agreed that there was value in this VIRTUAL meetup, and that it should be done again at a later time.
By the way, Dave Jackson did record the session and will be providing a URL or web link to the recorded audio very soon to us. When he does, then I will post it as another episode (an "extra special" blogpost) on this web location (or blog).

We also asked for any interested member who wants to become the organizer of this Austin Podcasters Group for 2009 to please contact me via email:

austinpodcasters@gmail.com.

We would like to have other members of this team be able to share in the organizational leadership for at least 3 month-blocks, so that all can participate and get more than they put into the group.

Our thanks to Dave Jackson for his participation and leadership in the roundtable and for being our guest during this 1st VIRTUAL meetup of the Austin Podcasters Group.

Sincerely,
Fred Castaneda,
2008 Organizer

Virtual Meetup scheduled for 25 September 2008
September 24, 2008 11:40 AM PDT

Austin Podcasters Group Meetup

Date: Thursday, 25 September 2008

Time: 7:00 p.m., Central time USA
Duration: 1 hour

Venue: VIRTUAL MEETUP

Details: By September 23, 2008, early in the morning, we will deliver an email to the Austin Podcasters Group members with the:
- details of access to the meetup;
- the web link to get to the webinar site;
- the finalized agenda

More on the VIRTUAL MEETUP:
- Many have expressed their feelings that the meetups IN PERSON were not convenient for physical attendance by everyone. Since we had a wide area of members' residing in ALL sectors of the Austin area, we were never able to get a "central" location for everyone to feel comfortable about attending.
Also, we had some members that belonged to the Austin Social Media club, and we wanted to avoid a conflict with that specific group (both had scheduled the meetings on the same Thursday of the month most of the time). Therefore, we waited until we knew that our meeting would NOT conflict with the AUSTIN SOCIAL MEDIA CLUB.

- Thus, we will have a VIRTUAL meetup over the web. So physical transportation and presence is not an issue. This will be conducted via a webinar-based system with a simple web link for access by the members (that's right, no client code or plug-ins to install for access).

- We will send the details of access in an email notice to the members by the morning of Sept. 23, 2008.

Tentative Agenda:
In the meantime, here is the tentative agenda for the meetup:

7:00 p.m. -- Meetup webinar starts

-- Introduction
-- Review of proposed agenda
-- News about the Podcasters Group: recent events, etc.
-- Introduction of Special Guest
-- "Roundtable" format for interactive discussion to include:
a. Podcaster resources, especially beginning tutorials
b. Best practices and referrals of other free podcast series
c. Tips on software, equipment and audio/video resources
d. Upcoming podcast and social media events

We should be able to get live demos and screen-share functions, so that everyone can "view" any demonstration that perhaps will answer the questions asked.

Looking forward to your participation in this meetup.

Again, we will send out another reminder on 23 September 2008, with the link access details. We will also have a post on our blog with an announcement about the meetup (the blog is located at:
[url=http://www.austinpodcasters.podomatic.com).

Sincerely,
Fred Castaneda, current Austin Podcasters Group coordinator

Episode 11- Meetup on 21 August 2008 and summary of New Media Expo 2008
August 25, 2008 04:47 AM PDT
itunes pic

In this espisode, we relate to the group a summary of the display of gear on 21 August 2008, as well as the agenda for the meeting. This will give those who did not get a chance to attend the meeting an idea of the items on display which then created interesting discussion among the attendees.

Welcome to our members Smiles Lewis and Glenn Ross. And thanks to Smiles for his comment and review of the meetup (you can see it on the web site for the meetup).

We had several members also discuss some of the topics of the agenda items of the New Media Expo 2008, which took place the week before-- from August 14 to August 16, 2008, in Las Vegas. At the event, I did see Shelly Brisbin, one of our members--but she was in an interview at the moment, and I did not get a chance to catch up with her again (one of the detriments of the event being in Las Vegas--as people scattered to different events, shows, locations and other locations in the Convention Center--and not like the "intimacy" of the prior 3 Expos at the Marriott and Ontario Convention Center in California).

I also gave a quick summary of the Podcast Secrets Reunion, which occurred the day before, in a different Las Vegas venue. Top among the topics were the benefits in the Expo and the Reunion resulting from my coming in as runner-up and 2nd-place winner of the Podcast Secrets Challenge contest among "veteran podcasters" (i.e., those who have already published a podcast before the challenge) as the most improved podcast (and the podcast series that won this award and recognition was http://www.gaincontrolofyourday.com). One of these benefits that created discussion was my promotion of my podcasts (I have 8 of them currently) at the Podcast

We did briefly discuss in detail the PremiumCast system and its benefits to those who want to publish a podcast and place their series into another directory--either for free or fee.

We also discussed different resources and free tutorials for those who are in the beginning stages of launching (or re-launching) podcast series. Of particular importance were the following:
- both the explanation and a live demonstration (using the Audio Technica 2020 USB microphone) at the end of the meeting of the LEVELATOR from Gigavox; and
- a discussion of syndication engines of both TUBEMOGUL and HELLOTXT and PING.FM;
- a set of documents that are being delivered now on how to make the best use of Twitter and its business uses;
- an explanation of the webinar/webcast/video content creation tool called MOGULUS;
- and finally, we had a few moments at the end of the audio podcast episode captured on the Zoom H2 portable recorder of a summary of both Smiles and Glenn, including the value that they received from the meetup on 21 August 2008.

We also agreed that either for the September or October meetup, we may have a VIRTUAL MEETUP via a webinar/webcast tool with audio dialogue and chat room ability. In this way, the majority of our members would have an opportunity to ask questions and see the screen demonstrations.

Our next meetup will be either September 18 or September 25--we will announce the date once we confirm that we do not have a conflict with the AUSTIN SOCIAL MEDIA MEETUP, since some of our members would like to attend both.
We will send out an email to the member distribution list as soon as we find out.

Episode 10- Austin Podcasters Meetup on 24 July 2008
July 26, 2008 06:35 PM PDT
itunes pic

During this meetup, we had an opportunity to cover the following topics:
(a) We showed via iTunes the video podcast demo of Dave Jackson's review of the Flip Video Camera (www.schoolofpodcasting.com - the Morning Announcements, and the show notes are at www.shownotes.schoolofpodcasting.com.)
(b) We demonstrated with a live recoding from the MXL007 USB condenser mic the use of the Levelator from Gigavox.com with the Audacity software;
(c) We discussed the upcoming New Media Expo and some of the pundits and sessions that would be taking place;
(d) We discussed podcast education and training, in particular the PODCAST SECRETS 2008 (of which I am a finalist in the Challenge contest, as one of the top 5 veteran podcasters), as well as Jason Van Orden's Professional Podcast Academy.
(e) We discussed the seven models of podcast monetization.
In attendance: Fred Castaneda, Bret Branon and Sique.

The podcast episode audio mp3 files gives much more detail.

(1) A NEW LOCATION FOR THE MEETUP --
our meetup location has changed. As promised, we looked for a more central location in the Austin Area. The location is now at:
The Community Room (at the Main Entrance) in the

08- June meetup cancelled; July is still on at different location
June 08, 2008 05:56 PM PDT
itunes pic

In this episode of The Austin Podcasters Group, we deliver 4 different themes in this podcast:

1. The meetup originally scheduled on 19 June 2008 is cancelled, as we were notified by several members that summer vacation plans and other conflicts are causing unavailability.
In addition, the MEETUP team is sponsoring a nationwide tour, and they will be meeting in Austin during the same week for feedback, etc., from MEETUP members. Since both of these in the same week would cause inconvenience, we decided to cancel the meetup meeting in June--but we will still meet in July, but only at a different location more centrally located to the members of South-Central Austin.
More to come in the next podcast and in future emails.

2. Doug Welch from http://www.welchwrite.com has given us 2 different podcast episodes with interesting tools for the podcaster (both are podcasts that can be downloaded from iTunes in the series CAREERS IN PODCASTING AND NEW MEDIA):
a. WOOPRA.COM for live blog and podcast statistics (which may be of interest to those who want to track what is going on NOW with their episodes); and
b. TUBEMOGUL.COM for pushing (or syndicating) your videos to various video catchers/directories at one time. In this episode, we describe how HelloTxt.com works, and it is very similar--but this time, for video.

3. The New Media Expo (formerly the Podcast and Portable Media Expo in Ontario, California) will be moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be 3 days from August 14-17, 2008. The Hilton is the conference hotel, and more information and details for the paid conference, free registration for the exhibits and unconferences in the exhibit hall, and hotel information can be found at:
http://www.newmediaexpo.com.
You may also subscribe to the Podcast Series about the Expo at the same URL, or from iTunes, you can download the episodes of the series THE PODCAST BROTHERS.

4. We also share with you other alternatives to audio besides podcasting for free and publishing episodes. The theme here is creating the audio for a published literary work or book.

Thanks to Doug Welch for his 7 June 2008 posts of his podcast episodes, which are the screencasts mentioned in the audio mp3 file for this post.

Meetup on 15 May 2008 - Summary and Update
May 24, 2008 12:56 PM PDT

For the meetup on 15 May 2008 at Opal Divine's Marina Restaurant of the Austin Podcasters Group, here are the main topics that were discussed (as have been summarized in the audio mp3 file):
1. The MXL 007 condenser microphone with USB interface;
2. A reacap of Podcamp San Antonio Numero Dos on May 3, 2008, especially with the Austin representation (3 members);
3. When we will have Dave Jackson to answer questions and give us a glimpse of Posts vs. Pages in WordPress;
4. Podcamp in Austin?
5. Now available: 17 hours of WAV format recording on the Zoom H2- affordable HC-SD card for the Zoom H2.
6. Semiologic on different blogs for podcasts
7. New location for summer meetups- more centralized for the membership. Also, discussion for a VIRTUAL MEETUP online in July.

We will be sending out a meetup email notice before 8 June 2008, with the exact date of the meetup (either 12 June or 19 June at 7:00 p.m., and the location and address and directions).

We shall see you then.
Fred Castaneda, interim Podcasters Group Leader.

Podcamp San Antonio and the MXL-007 mic

In this episode, we have a recap of the activity and participation from several of the members of the Austin Podcasters Group as they took part on 3 May 2008 in Podcamp San Antonio-Numero Dos. It took place at the El Tropicano Hotel of the Holiday Inn chain in downtown San Antonio, Texas.
This second annual Podcamp in San Antonio had two concurrent sessions going on. In the main tent session, the topics for the veteran podcasters and New Media professionals were being discussed, while in the adjoining room, those who were interested in learning about Podcasting congregated to listen to Alysan Delaney-Childs and Fred Castaneda speak about Blog Basics and Podcast Basics. In addition, Shelly Brisbin also gave a presentation on portable recorders. And we had one of our new members, William Foster (the podcaster of the PILOTS LOG podcast) attend to learn additional techniques.

This episode also presents the usage of the MXL-007 condenser microphone with a USB connection. I actually used it in the beginning and the end of the audio mp3 file for this episode, so that you can get an idea of the sound quality. You can get a full review of this in a video podcast by Mark Jensen of the PODSQOD podcast.

The podcast episode ends with a reminder that our next meeting will be on Thursday, 15 May 2008 at 7:00 pm. We are tentatively scheduled to meet at Opal Divine's Marina restaurant. However, we will be talking to the manager on 13 May 2008 of the Fry's Outpost location (which is physically across the parking lot next door). If we can meet in the snack area at Fry's, then a meetup email will go out on Tuesday evening to inform the membership. The Fry's location will be better suited for our meeting and our discussion with our guest speaker that will call in via phone -- Dave Jackson from the SCHOOL OF PODCASTING podcast.

Looking forward to seeing the membership on Thursday night, 15 May 2008, at 7pm. The meetup email on 13 May will have the final location.

Thanks for your support, and we shall see you there.

Note: Podcast Music licensed from http://www.michaelandmike.com.

Also: CORRECTION -- I had erroneously referred to the MXL-007 microphone as the "XML" microphone. This is, unfortuantely, a professional slip of the tongue and force of habit, as I deal with close-caption support for video and audio and with the Extensible Markup Language (XML). The correct name is "MXL"-007 USB microphone. I apologize for this error, because I used the incorrect name throughout the entire podcast.

In this episode of the Austin Podcasters Meetup audio podcast, we present 3 different themes:
(1) We introduce Joel Driver and John Mayo to the team. These attendees shared with us their experiences and also helped with suggestions and information to help other podcasters.
(2) We have an audio clip that was recorded live at the table where our Austin Podcasters Meetup was having our discussion and our hardware display. We discussed the hardware, as well as Dave Jackson of the School of Podcasting (at www.schoolofpodcasting.com), who had created a 5-minute Camtasia screencast demo for this meetup so we can understand the offerings better.
(3) We then played the audio clip from Dave Jackson, which can also be found at http://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/meetup.
This clip walks you through all the resources, benefits, and navigation at the School of Podcasting.
(4) We also summarized the new events coming up, like the PODCAMP SAN ANTONIO (NUMERO DOS) -- the second annual Podcamp. For informationn and other registration information, please contact Jennifer Navarrete, who is epodcaster@gmail.com.
(5) We talked about the direction of the Austin Podcasters Group and several suggestions to improve the location (such as perhaps a demo area or in the snack area of the Fry's next door).

We hope to get a good showing at Podcamp San Antonio on 3 May 2008, from 9 am to 5 pm. You can find out about it and register at :
http://www.podcampsanantonio.org.

Our next meeting is at 7pm on Thursday evening, 15 May 2008. Another email and reminders of the meetup will be going out in several weeks.
Thanks for your support.

Doug Welch of welchwrite.com - Guest Speaker for 13March2008

On March 13, 2008, we had the pleasure of speaking with Doug Welch, who is douglas@welchwrite.com. He was our guest speaker for the last meetup that we sponsored at Opal Divine's Marina Restaurant in Austin, Texas.
The audio has just a few clips from the dialog that we had with him at that time via phone connection.
In this conversation, Doug gave hints and tips for post-production techniques that can save time for podcasters, and he also noted how he takes podcasting into every aspect of his life--from the gardening that he enjoys to the tech topics that make up part of his passion.

As a highlight for the next meetup event for the Austin Podcasters Group, we are scheduled to have David Jackson as our guest speaker. Dave has over 7 podcasts and is most notable for his School of Podcasting Morning Announcements show at http://www.schoolofpodcasting.com.
Dave also has other podcast series--such as:
- Podcast Promo Show
- Building a Better Dave
- Musician's Cooler
- Logical Weight Loss
- Weekly Web Tools
...just to name a few.
Dave has a site that provides value to the aspiring podcaster, as well as to the new podcasters (and even experienced podcasters) with the resources in his School of Podcasting. We'll let Dave tell you all about that in our discussion, which is scheduled for:
7:00 p.m. Central time
at the Opal Divine's Marina Restaurant in North Austin.

See you there!

This episode is the second part of the summary from the Meetup of the Austin Podcasters Group on 13 March 2008.
We are now working on the audio recording from the Meetup that included the discussion with our guest speaker, Douglas Welch -- a podcaster with High-Tech education, background, experience and now a Podcaster with 6 podcasts currently in his portfolio (see the previous episode for more details).

We will post the audio when it has been completed, along with some prolog and epilog announcements. Thank you.

Summary of Austin Podcaster Meetup of 13 March 08

Dear Austin Podcasters,
Thanks to those who did attend the meetup on Thursday evening, 13 March 2008 at the Opal Divine's Marina Restaurant in North Austin.
We had a several interesting discussions and sharing of ideas during the meetup:

(1) We had a display of various pieces of hardware -- including portable podcast recorders, mixers, microphones, etc. -- along with some images, slides and photos of other products that were discussed for the interested or beginning-level podcaster.
As a matter of fact, the audio mp3 file for this episode recorded the dialog with one of the members and his perspectives about the display -- namely John Mayo, who is the podcaster for http://www.comicbookpage.com. Click on the icon or link near the title of this episode to listen to the 8-minute summary.

NOTE: The audio recording of the discussion with John Mayo and Fred Castaneda was captured by the Zoom H2 Portable Recorder from Samson using the table-top mount--John was using the front speakers and Fred the rear speakers. The audio was saved as a wav file and then brought in to Audacity to edit out the beginning and end audio tests. Then the file was exported to mp3 format using Audacity. THIS AUDIO WAS NOT LEVELATED and no EQ or other treatment was done on this file--so that you can get an idea of the native audio recording quality of the Zoom H2 Portable Recorder. Fred then used the "handle" accessory (called the "fudgesicle stick" in order to demonstrate the modification of the H2 from a desktop unit to a portable hand-held and battery-operated unit (to be used by a podcaster in a "roving-reporter" interview situation--by the way, I did use it this way during the Podcast and New Media Expo in September of 2007, when I interviewed Rob Walch of podcast411.com while he was speaking to people at the Wizzard Media booth right in the middle of the show floor in the exhibit hall, so that you can get an idea of the ambient noise with the Zoom H2).

(2) Possibility of meetups on a Saturday?
The suggestion came up that perhaps the membership would be able to participate more easily if we had the meetups at a convenient time in a more centrally located venue on a Saturday. The reason was given that this is the way that the San Antonio Podcasters Group follows for its meetup, and they seem to get a 35- to -50 per cent attendance rate for every meeting.
The suggestions were noted, and this was tabled for further discussion as an agenda item for the April 17th meeting.

(3) Guest speaker: Doug Welch from http://www.welchwrite.com.
As you can see from the image displayed, Doug is the creator, editor, talent and producer/publisher for five of his six podcasts:
- Career Opportunities (I strongly suggest that you subscribe to this);
- Careers in Podcasting and New Media;
- Technology IQ
- Gardener's Notebook
- My Word

and he also produces one for hire, which is
- Mortgages made simple.

In the next episode, we will have some excerpts from the conversation we had with Doug Welch as part of our meetup. In this same episode, we will also deliver the details of the discussion during the meetup about the Austin Podcasters Group -- what direction the members feel we should go, what upcoming events are scheduled, and what other venues should we have so that the membership can attend and participate.

Reminder: the next meetup for the Group will be on Thursday evening, 17 April 2008, at Opal Divine's Marina Restaurant in North Austin at 7:00 pm. We have scheduled this location for the initial 3 meetings; as we discuss the location of the future meetups in the next 2 meetings, we can then confirm when and where future meetings will be held and then publish that for the rest of the membership.

See you at the next meeting on 17 April 2008 at 7pm. You will be getting the meetup notices via your email.

Welcome to the Austin Podcasters Group
Clean
February 26, 2008 02:39 AM PST

Welcome!

From the new Austin Podcasting Group meetup team of 2008, we would like to welcome you to the new leadership of the Meetup, and to an exciting year in Podcasting.

For those of you who are members of the group, please look forward to receiving our newsletters about the Austin Podcaster Group and to subscribing to the podcast series that will provide audio mp3 files about the group and its activities--so that you are always involved and up-to-date with the team.

We will be sending you an email with the date, time and location of the next meetup, as well as the details of the blog and podcast for the Group.

In the meantime, we'd like to thank you for your interest in the Austin Podcasting Group and look forward to meeting you in person at one of the local meetups.
Remember -- there is no "leader," but merely a coordinator who will try to provide some initial direction in which everyone on the team can contribute and also can get the most out of this Podcasting Community in Austin.

Sincerely,

Fred Castaneda
